Douglas A. Datt is a Partner in Kiernan Trebach’s Rockville, Maryland office. Prior to joining Kiernan Trebach, Mr. Datt practiced for more than thirty years with the firm of Gavett, Datt & Barish, a firm he co-founded as Gavett & Datt, P.C. in 1992. He is an experienced trial attorney and counselor working on behalf of both businesses and individuals. His excellent legal abilities translate not only to satisfied clients, but also to recognition by his peers. Mr. Datt has received a Peer Review Rating of "AV®", the highest rating by Martindale-Hubbell regarding an attorney’s legal ability and professional ethics.
Mr. Datt began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Atlantic Judicial Circuit in Hinesville, Georgia. After gaining valuable trial experience prosecuting major felonies, he returned to Maryland in 1983 where he served as Assistant State’s Attorney for Charles County, Maryland. Mr. Datt was responsible for prosecuting a variety of crimes including murder, rape, child abuse and theft-related offenses, among others. Mr. Datt then went into private practice.
Mr. Datt’s civil litigation practice includes advising clients and litigating in the areas of personal injury, construction defects and accidents, medical malpractice, worker's compensation and general tort defense litigation. Mr. Datt also represents individuals, corporations and businesses in matters ranging from collection, corporate formation, asset sales and purchases to employment-related issues. Mr. Datt is experienced in providing mediation and arbitration services to individuals and companies. In a mediation setting, he provides Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services, assisting attorneys, individuals, companies and other groups to work together to identify and resolve their conflicts in a collaborative effort to avoid and/or limit expensive litigation.
In mediating or arbitrating matters, he brings his considerable experience to bear in addressing and handling disputes in the areas of personal injury, labor and employment, construction, business/commercial, workers’ compensation, malpractice, premises liability, insurance, and products liability cases.
