Naomi A. Plakins is a retired partner in the firm’s Philadelphia office, where she concentrated her practice on the defense of physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers in complex medical-malpractice litigation. As first chair, she tried to verdict high-exposure cases involving cancer diagnosis, catastrophic birth injuries, open-heart surgery, minimally invasive surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, catastrophic neurologic injury, pediatric ophthalmology, and sudden cardiac death, to name a few. She has tried approximately 100 major cases to verdict in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties, and has been awarded Martindale-Hubbell’s AV-Preeminent rating in legal ability and ethics for over a decade. She has been named a Pennsylvania SuperLawyer since 2006.
Ms. Plakins also maintained an active litigation practice in the defense of individuals and institutions in matters involving general liability, products liability, pharmacy liability, nursing home liability, insurance coverage, construction and a wide variety of commercial matters.
Ms. Plakins has served as a Faculty Panel Member at seminars presented at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, and has been an invited speaker on medical malpractice topics at numerous professional liability insurance companies and hospital risk management departments.
After attending Bryn Mawr College and graduating from Brandeis University in 1971, Ms. Plakins received her M.F.A. from Columbia University in New York City in 1974, and her Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut in 1977. She is admitted to the state bars of Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and to the Federal Courts for the District of Connecticut, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
She is a Member of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the Philadelphia and Bucks County Bar Associations.
